The United States owes its pre-eminence in the fields of manufacturing, healthcare, energy, environment and national security to the advances in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). For the growth of the economy, it is vital that educational pathways lead to careers in STEM as they will not only be the jobs of the future, but will also help to create a more inclusive society. New Immigration Rules for STEM Professionals
The new Immigration reform bill has a separate section dealing with Immigrant Visas for STEM professionals. Under the new rules Persons with advanced degrees in STEM fields will be eligible for immigrant visas if they fulfil a set of conditions. Read more about the rules on Page 304.
Richmond Police Activities League On Track for the HIMARQS Pilot Program
The Richmond Police Activities League (RPAL) has agreed to be a part of the HIMARQS pilot program. RPAL is a non-profit organization that provides educational activities for youth in the inner city. The HIMARQS online tests will be used to evaluate math and science skills, and teach technology and engineering topics.
STEM Week to be held in Washington DC from April 23rd-25th, 2014
U.S. News & World Report has tied up with USA Science & Engineering Festival to organize STEM Week in Washington D.C. from April 23-25, 2014. Visionaries and professionals from business, education, and government will participate in the event, which will be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The objective of the event is to give momentum to the agenda for national change in STEM education, policy and workforce development.
Colleges Working out New Ways to Help Women Continue with STEM Majors
Currently, STEM careers are male dominated with women accounting for only around 25% of the students. Colleges are developing strategies for changing this situation.
